Solar Prism
I create work that explores color perception and optical phenomena, drawing from fields such as color theory and Gestalt psychology to establish visual environments that are both inviting and disorienting. To conceptually express mediations of experience, I utilize the versatility of oil paint and the language of geometric abstraction to layer and juxtapose color, value, and form. Ultimately, my work encourages viewers to question their understanding of perception.
Central to my work are densely repeated, sharply angled patterns of cellular or geometric forms. These patterns serve as the foundation on which I build color, form, and surface moments (gloss, satin, matte, etc.). Inspired by optical art and post-painterly abstraction, I view this foundation as a metaphor for the order and regulation that humans impose on the world, which is then confronted by the complexities and pluralities of reality. I express this through perceptual phenomena, intentional distortions, and color theory.
