10 Rules by Corita Kent

Constantly learning, trying and practicing new techniques and methods have always been my priority as an artist here at MECA&D. As someone who comes from a low privileged community and hadn’t experienced a proper art education—my technique, passion and gratitude have grown miles long for who I have become today. My art practice, how I interpret artwork, the expression of my creativity and how I can reach back out to the community has been the most valuable part of my education. I’ve always found great stability and support amongst my peers and educators, which gave me the inspiration to have my thesis be a sequence that surrounds a healthy, productive learning environment. Corita Kent’s “10 Rules of Education” are admired department rules on reimagining what a learning environment could be. Illustrating Kent’s rules is my expression of self style, exploration and educational freedom, to which will forever give me the strength to continue my future creative pursuits.

Bio

My name is Kayla Brouillard, I’m an illustrator who enjoys all aspects of techniques, materials and expressions. Constantly practicing, learning, and embracing new forms of style is my artistic vision. I enjoy the styles of minimalism, realism, character development and mixed media through my artwork. My thesis is a collection of 10, 18 x 24, poster sized illustrations based on Corita Kent’s “10 Rules” — admired department rules on reimagining what a learning environment could be. These pieces encourage my artistic freedom and confidence in style, while showing the importance of a healthy, productive learning environment.
